This is the pilot that was made to get "local" televsion personality Lawrence Welk picked up as a network series. One of the most "square" things you'll ever see, but that's part of the charm....

One of My All Time Favorite Shows
This is a real early show (that I've never seen before) and it's interesting to see some of the performers on here who would stay on for 15 or 20 years. Bob Lido and Aladdin, Myron Floren, and Lawrence's cousin on the drums. This is apparently before the debut of the Lennon Sisters who would first appear in December 1955.
If you liked music for music's sake this show was entertaining; some of it quite dated but the standards were well performed..It began a decline in the early - mid 70's when they attempted to "modernize" and there were bad compositions and the standard performers started to got replaced - it's a genre, not to be tinkered with.

Networks Should Of Past On This Show
Am surprise that a network actually pick up this show. That composer on there seems boring and hum drum. No wonder the network that had the show dropped and it went to first run syndication. Also the music was not the taste of people at the time. Could of went with a better show than this.

Nobody said that THIS episode aired locally. In fact this episode never aired at all. Lawrence Welk was a "local" personality at the time, and this pilot was produced to pitch the show to the national networks (the Dodge commercials date from different years, they could not have AIRED in the same program together. Note that one of them is for the 1954 model year while another is for a 1956 model year. They were added presumably because Dodge already wanted to be the sponsor prior to it being picked up as a network series, and were used to show how the show would look with commercials). Note that the actual show was aired LIVE, while this unaired pilot was shot on film.

I thoroughly enjoyed this.Welk was virtually unknown in England so I am not overly familiar with him.He had a good band and the show is good entertainment. It would be nice to see more. Thanks to the uploader.
